Almost three and a half years is quite a long time for bottom paint. The old paint was still in surprisingly good shape despite having been scraped and scrubbed several times and despite the boat\u2019s having spent extended periods of time in very biologically \u201chot\u201d waters (areas where marine growth accumulates rapidly on anything submerged for more than a few days).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_188\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/witanco.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P1000976_480x640.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-188\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-188\" title=\"P1000976_480x640\" src=\"http:\/\/witanco.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P1000976_480x640-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/witanco.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P1000976_480x640-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/witanco.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P1000976_480x640.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-188\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Note detached forestay with roller furling on left of photo -- it had to come off for the boat to fit in the Travelift<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As boatyards go, this one is pretty nice, though pricey.<br \/>\nThe employees here, from the laundry lady and the<br \/>\noffice help to the guys working in the yard, are invariably<br \/>\npleasant and friendly, and the work ethic is good. The<br \/>\nguys who prepped and painted my hull did a very<br \/>\nthorough, careful job, which I appreciate greatly. <span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">xxxxxx<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx<\/span><br \/>\nI\u2019m running a couple of days behind plan, but that\u2019s not<br \/>\na problem. I expect to be on my way on Thursday or<br \/>\nFriday, all bills paid and all official check-out paperwork<br \/>\ncompleted well before everything shuts down for Christmas.<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx<\/span><br \/>\nCartagena\u2019s not a bad town at all \u2013 outside of the Centro<br \/>\nHistorico, the working-class and industrial neighborhoods<br \/>\nremind me a lot of Mexico. The Centro Historico, although<br \/>\npretty touristy in some places and the aggressive emerald<br \/>\nsales people become tedious, is marvelous, a beautifully<br \/>\npreserved and well presented example of 16<sup>th-<\/sup> to 18<sup>th-<br \/>\n<\/sup>century Spanish Colonial engineering and architecture,<br \/>\nwith a few turn-of-the-century Neo-Classic buildings thrown<br \/>\ninto the mix.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On balance it\u2019s been fun, but I\u2019m ready to beat feet outta here and get on with next steps.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hauled out to renew the anti-fouling paint, something I hadn\u2019t done since about March of 2008, in Balboa, Panama, when I also rebuilt the Perkins diesel and with Emmet stripped the failing old teak planking off the deck.
